Unable to sign-in to Hotmail: Blank page

Sometimes users are unable to connect to hotmail and just a blank page is seen. It is not a problem with MSN Messenger or the Instant Messaging software. However, the internet browser settings should be checked for correct configurations, including cookies, etc. It is not an uncommon problem for hotmail to open with a blank page. It is recommended users check the account name and password entered are correct. Users can also check the SSL configuration of the browser if they are unable to connect to hotmail



If you see a blank page each time you try to connect to Hotmail, try the following: 

1. Account name and Password

Ensure that you have entered the correct account name (e.g. johnsmith@hotmail.com) and password. Don't forget that the password field is case sensitive.

2. Browser settings - enable cookies.

To configure your browser to allow cookies, open your browser window, go to "Tools" and select "Internet Options". In the "Security" tab, select a moderate security level for the internet zone.

3. SSL configurations

SSL is an acronym for Secure Sockets Layer. It is a protocol built up by Netscape and used to send out private documents through the internet. Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer browsers both support this protocol and some web sites make use of it to acquire confidential information on users. You can identify the URLs that require an SSL connection as they begin https: instead of http: If your browser is not configured to allow access those secured websites, try the following: 

Configure your encryption settings

1. Open Internet Explorer > "About Internet Explorer". 2. Your encryption settings should be set to 128 bit. If it is less than 128, you may install the Internet Explorer High Encryption Pack from this link:http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie6/downloads/recommended/128bit/default.mspx 

Enable SSL and TLS

1. Go to "Tools" in your Internet Explorer window and select "Internet Options". 2. In the "Advanced" tab, scroll down to the SSL and TLS options. 
3. Check these two options and click "Apply". 

Clear History and delete Cookies

Note: When you delete your cookies, this might also delete some saved passwords on your system. 
1. Go to "Tools" in your Internet Explorer window and select "Internet Options". 
2. In the "General" tab, select "Delete Cookies" and "Delete Files" in the "Temporary Internet Files" section 
3. Select "Clear History" options in the "History" section. 

Disable Third Party Browser Extensions

1. Go to "Tools" in your Internet Explorer window and select "Internet Options". 2. In the "Advanced" tab, uncheck the box labeled "Enable Third party Browser Extensions" and click "Apply". 
3. Close your browser and open it again. 

Configuration of Security settings for Trusted sites zone

1. Go to "Tools" in your Internet Explorer window and select "Internet Options". 2. In the "Security" tab, choose Trusted Sites. 
3. Click "Sites" and enter the URL of the site in the field labeled "Add this Web site to the Zone". 
4. Click "Add", "Ok" and "Apply". 

Configuration of your Firewall Settings

To check your Firewall configuration, your SSL port must be open on your network/firewall settings.

Clear SSL Slate

To clear the SSL slate: 1. Select "Tools" on your menu bar and open your "Internet Options". 
2. Go for the "Content" tab and select "Certificates". 
3. Click "Clear SSL Slate" and "OK". 
4. You should receive a message to confirm that it has been cleared. 

Choosing a different browser

If all the above options did not solve the problem, you can try using another browser, such as Mozilla Firefox
