Android - Optimize the use of the Youtube app over slow networks

In this article you will learn how to optimize the use of the Youtube app over a slow networks. 

Disable high-quality videos over mobile network

High-quality videos take longer to load. To improve the performance of the Youtube app when connected to mobile network (3G), it is recommended that you disable the use of high-quality videos. The procedure is as follows:

  • Open the Youtube app
  • Tap on the Menu key > Settings.

  • Tap on General.
  • Uncheck "High quality on mobile".


Preload your subscriptions and watch later playlist

  • You can configure the Youtube app to preload your subscriptions and watch later playlist when your phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network or is being charged.

Note that: The preloading feature will make use of your phone's storage to temporarily store data from Youtube, resulting in the faster loading of your favorite videos on slow networks. 
To enable this feature:
  • Tap on the Menu key > Settings.

  • Tap on Preloading.
  • Check the following options:
    • Preload subscriptions.
    • Preload watch later.
